  2. To provide an overview of the P2P Foundation project to build new open enterprise governance models

Definition of Category:Enterprise

The word "enterprise" can refer to any business, nonprofit group, association, organization, or group of individuals with a common goal. Entrepreneurs are individuals that start or improve enterprises.

An article should be labeled as a member of this category if it directly addresses the issue of how enterprise operates within or with respect to the P2P dynamic.

If it is unclear whether an article should be tagged with this category, a good question to ask is: will this article be useful to the project to build new open enterprise models?

Project: Open Enterprise Governance Models

This project will be oriented by the explicit political aims of the P2P foundation, as listed on the Main Page. It will explore the possibility of improved enterprise models that can support these aims by successfully competing with traditional enterprise, without at the same time engaging in the environmentally and socially destructive practices that typify traditional models. For this new kind of enterprise, we use the umbrella term Open Entreprise.

This project takes its cue from the free open source method of software development. Its initial goal is to collaboratively create a model of the minimum operational structure necessary to found an open enterprise. To extend the software analogy, the goal of the project would be to create an open enterprise operating system, with the first step being the creation of a kernel. Such a platform would enable the rapid development of new open enterprises, as well as the integration of existing enterprise into the P2P framework.

This project demands the following sub-projects.

Preliminary Exploration of Open Enterprise

It is necessary to determine how open enterprise, operating within the P2P dynamic, fundamentally differs from traditional enterprise. This will require a radical analysis of enterprise generally. Once a preliminary structure of open enterprise is agreed upon, it will possible to make specific recommendations for the implementation of open enterprise.

This exploration will take place on the Open Entreprise page.

Unification of Research Efforts

There are multiple online groups and individual thinkers working to create new open enterprise models. A number of these groups also have plans for open enterprises of their own. While it is important to encourage a plurality of enterprises, it would be beneficial to all of these groups to avoid unnecessary reproduction of work by building an open enterprise knowledge commons.

The maturity and sophistication of the P2P Foundation make it a strong candidate to house such a project. Once the nature of the project is at least partly clarified, project members can begin the work of recruiting other open enterprise model designers. Leaders of specific open enterprise projects may welcome this project, as it disburdens them of the task of building their enterprise model from scratch and allows them to focus on the local development of their enterprise.

Here is a list of likely recruits: List of Open Enterprises

Organization of Existing Resources

Within the P2P Foundation wiki alone, there are numerous pages that should be tagged with the "Enterprise" category. Also, once the concept of open enterprise is further clarified and a common vocabulary is developed, there will be a need to refactor existing pages. This will be accompanied by the continued documentation of external resources using wiki pages and del.icio.us bookmarks.
